Overview
The Island Golf Club is one of Ireland’s most historic and prestigious links courses, located just north of Dublin in the dramatic coastal dunes of Donabate. Founded in 1890, it stands as one of the country’s oldest golf clubs and is consistently ranked among the top links experiences in Ireland. With towering dunes, natural corridors, wild fescue and sweeping sea views, The Island is an unforgettable test of traditional links golf in its purest form.
Set on a rugged peninsula bordered by the Irish Sea, Donabate Estuary and Broadmeadow Estuary, the course embraces its name — “The Island” — thanks to its original remote access and dramatic natural isolation. Even today, the landscape feels untamed and atmospheric, offering a raw, authentic links challenge shaped by the wind, the land and the elements.
The layout is defined by narrow, dune-flanked fairways, elevated tees, deep revetted bunkers, natural valleys and fast, firm greens. Many holes twist through towering sand dunes, creating an exhilarating sense of scale and shot-making drama. The routing demands creativity, accuracy and intelligent navigation of coastal winds. While challenging, the course is also fair and beautifully presented, offering immense variety across all 18 holes.
In recent years, renowned architects Mackenzie & Ebert have refined and modernised elements of the course while preserving its traditional character. Updated bunkering, reshaped greens and enhanced sightlines have elevated the playing experience and reinforced The Island’s position among Ireland’s elite championship links.
The clubhouse blends tradition with comfort, offering panoramic views over the estuary and dunes. Its warm Irish hospitality, high-quality dining and relaxed bar make it a welcoming retreat before or after a round. Practice facilities include a dedicated short-game area, putting greens and modern warm-up zones, ensuring visitors can fully prepare for the strategic test ahead.
Steeped in heritage, blessed with stunning natural scenery and renowned for its pure links challenge, The Island Golf Club is a must-play course for golfers visiting Dublin or exploring Ireland’s east coast.
