Overview
The Royal Dublin Golf Club is one of Ireland’s oldest and most prestigious links courses, located on the historic Bull Island nature reserve overlooking Dublin Bay. Founded in 1885 and granted its “Royal” designation by Queen Victoria, it is the second oldest golf club in Ireland and stands as a monument to traditional links golf. With its rich heritage, strategic design and coastal setting, Royal Dublin remains one of the country’s most respected championship venues.
The course was originally designed by H.S. Colt and later redesigned by the legendary Harry Colt. Most recently, renowned architects Mackenzie & Ebert have sensitively modernised and enhanced the layout, refining bunkering, reshaping greens and restoring natural links characteristics that strengthen its strategic challenge while preserving its historic identity.
Royal Dublin is a classic out-and-back links layout. The opening nine holes travel along the spine of Bull Island, while the inward nine return toward the clubhouse with stunning views across Dublin Bay and the city skyline. Fairways are deceptively narrow, bordered by fescue rough and sculpted dunes, demanding accuracy and intelligent positioning. Deep revetted bunkers and fast, firm greens add further precision to the test.
Wind is a defining feature of Royal Dublin — the exposed island setting means conditions can change dramatically, requiring careful club selection and creative shot execution. Despite its challenge, the course remains fair and beautifully presented, with immaculate conditioning year-round.
The atmosphere throughout is steeped in tradition. The historic clubhouse offers a warm welcome, elegant dining, a relaxing bar and fascinating memorabilia that reflect over a century of Irish golfing history. The panoramic views from the clubhouse add to the sense of occasion before and after the round.
Practice facilities include a driving range, putting greens and dedicated short-game areas, ensuring players can fully prepare for the strategic demands of this championship links. Royal Dublin has hosted numerous prestigious events, including multiple Irish Opens, the Irish Amateur Championship and top-tier professional tournaments.
Royal Dublin’s blend of heritage, thoughtful design and authentic links character makes it a must-play course for visitors to Ireland’s east coast — a true classic that continues to stand proudly among the world’s great links.
