Overview
Carne Golf Links, located on the remote Belmullet Peninsula in County Mayo, is one of the most dramatic, natural and awe-inspiring links courses in the world. Designed by the legendary Eddie Hackett and later expanded by Jim Engh and Ally McIntosh, Carne is celebrated for its towering dunes, wild Atlantic scenery and rugged, untouched character. It is often described as Ireland’s last great undiscovered links — a place where golf merges with nature in its purest form.
Set among some of the highest natural dunes in the world, Carne’s landscape is nothing short of spectacular. The original Hackett 18 flows through massive dune corridors, weaving between ridges and valleys that feel as if they were created expressly for golf. Every hole has its own unique personality, shaped by the land rather than imposed upon it. Blind shots, elevated tees, rumpled fairways and natural green sites create a thrilling and authentic links challenge.
The addition of the Wild Atlantic Dunes course, completed with nine new holes and enhanced by further routing options, has transformed Carne into a world-class 27-hole links destination. The new holes push deeper into the dunes, offering extraordinary views over Blacksod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean while maintaining Carne’s signature raw beauty and natural flow.
Carne is a place of solitude and atmosphere. The remoteness adds to its magic — the feeling of being on the edge of the world, surrounded by wind, dunes, sea and sky. Conditions change constantly, demanding imagination, shot-making creativity and a sense of adventure.
The club is proudly community-owned, and its warm hospitality reflects that spirit. The clubhouse is simple but welcoming, offering hearty Irish food, a relaxed bar and panoramic views over the dunes and coastline. Practice facilities include putting greens and short-game areas suitable for a warm-up, though Carne’s true test lies in the course itself.
Carne Golf Links is an unforgettable experience — wild, unspoiled, challenging and breathtakingly beautiful. It stands among the very best links courses in Ireland and is a bucket-list destination for golfers seeking authentic links golf at its most natural and dramatic.
