Overview
PGA National Ireland Slieve Russell is one of Ireland’s premier parkland golf destinations, set within 300 acres of rolling countryside, lakes and mature woodlands in County Cavan. As only one of a select number of PGA-branded courses in the world, it offers a championship-standard experience that blends scenic beauty, exceptional conditioning and perfectly crafted strategic design.
The course was designed by renowned architect Patrick Merrigan and is widely recognised as one of the finest inland layouts in Ireland. The routing makes superb use of the natural landscape, weaving through dense forests, lakes, streams and gently undulating terrain. Water is a defining feature, coming into play on several memorable holes, particularly across the closing stretch where lakes frame dramatic approaches.
Fairways are generous yet require thoughtful placement, with cleverly positioned bunkers and natural contours shaping ideal landing areas. The greens are beautifully maintained — fast, true and often subtly contoured — demanding precision on approach shots and confident putting. While the course provides a strong challenge from the championship tees, it remains fair and enjoyable for higher handicaps thanks to multiple tee options and strategic flexibility.
One of the major highlights is the stunning final four holes, often described as some of the best finishing holes in Irish golf. These holes hug the lakes and offer a mix of beauty and strategic challenge that leaves a lasting impression on every golfer.
The setting is tranquil and picturesque. Mature trees, shimmering water features and wildlife-rich surroundings create a serene environment that feels worlds away from the bustle of everyday life. Slieve Russell has hosted numerous professional and elite amateur events, including the Irish PGA Championship, confirming its quality and reputation.
The clubhouse provides warm hospitality, comfortable dining, bar areas, panoramic course views and full locker-room facilities. The hotel and resort amenities further elevate the experience, making it an ideal stay-and-play destination.
PGA National Ireland Slieve Russell is a standout course for golfers seeking a championship parkland experience surrounded by natural beauty, world-class design and exceptional service.
