The midlands are parkland country, and the golf here is the most sheltered in Ireland. When the coast is unplayable in a gale, this is where the round still goes ahead, which is worth knowing if you are travelling outside summer.
The K Club is the draw, a Ryder Cup venue with two courses and the kind of resort infrastructure large groups need. Esker Hills is the opposite in every way: a quirky, rolling Christy O’Connor Jnr layout in Offaly that costs a fraction and is enormous fun.
An hour from Dublin airport makes this an easy add on to a links week rather than a trip in itself, and that is usually how we build it.
