Set in a stunning 360-acre estate, amidst an impressive array of natural surroundings, in the western Algarve, the Penina Golf Resort is the original home of golf in the Algarve and is renowned for some of the finest and most challenging golf in the world.
The resort boasts three excellent golf courses: ‘The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course’, the 9-hole, ‘Resort Course’ and the 9-hole, ‘Academy Course’.
The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course is the first 18-hole course to have been constructed in the Algarve and has hosted 10 Portuguese Opens and scores of other prestigious tournaments. Known as one of the most challenging – and satisfying – courses in the whole of Portugal, this Par 73 is as unforgiving as it is beautiful. Flanked by streams, ditches and water hazards, the course boasts breathtaking scenery and an extensive array of subtle slopes and elevated greens…. well-known for catching out even the most careful of golfers!
The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four of the five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nine – producing a Par 38 as opposed to 35. The par 3, 13th hole has been voted one of the best 500 holes in the world. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers… great fun and a great challenge.
There are a variety of different tee positions making this course accessible to many different levels of player, who will be guaranteed one of the most memorable rounds you will ever play.
Practice facilities at the Penina Golf Resort include a driving range with natural Bermuda grass surface, putting and chipping greens and practice bunker.
