Situated on the golden links of the Northwest coast in Southport, Royal Birkdale is possibly the finest of all courses in England and has held the Open Championship ten times.
Royal Birkdale is a pure links course, measure 6,690 yards and although the distance itself is a test even for the most accomplished golfer, the sea wind, whistling down the fairways, adds to the challenge.
Each hole runs through a landscape of high dunes; the fairways are flat and fair and from the tee there is generally a clear view of the task ahead. Every hole here is memorable.
From The Open Championship tees the 6th and 13th holes both measure 498 yards and are two of the longest par 4s in championship golf. The par 3, 12th hole is cited as Royal Birkdale’s signature hole- playing to a narrow, well-guarded green surrounded by deep bunkers, with natural dune and rough. Accuracy is essential here with the swirling coastal winds and a fast, contoured green, it is a true test of shot-making and nerve!
The art-deco clubhouse stands overlooking the 18th green, with its enormous bay window displaying spectacular view over the course. The Clubhouse restaurant offers everything from a casual breakfast to fine dining.
With its distinguished heritage, Birkdale is regarded as one of the world’s great links courses—an iconic, challenging venue steeped in golf history.
