Nestling between two busy seaside resorts, the Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Course in Lancashire, is one of the premier links courses in the World which has been host to eleven Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments.
Renowned as one of the toughest and best designed links courses in the world, the 18-hole, par 70 links course lies away from the sea, yet it still features the typical links features of sandy soil, firm turf, costal grass and the sea breeze to affect your game. To add to the challenge, the fairways are firm and undulating, the greens fast and contoured and there are 174 strategically positioned pot bunkers peppering the fairways and surrounding the greens, lying in wait for errant shots. Accuracy, strategic thinking, and thoughtful shot making are essential here!
The course opens with a par 3, the only major championship course to do so, but rather than a gentle introduction, the first hole presents ample warning of the demands that lie ahead. The first four holes and last five are said to be amongst the trickiest in Britain. Between them lie the holes of the legendary Seve Ballesteros ‘five birdies and an eagle’ run on his way to winning the 1979 Open Championship and the bind tee shot from the 16th is renowned for Seve’s ‘car park’ shot and subsequent birdie.
The grand, Victorian clubhouse offers a place to relax and soak up the history of this legendary club. Here you will also find Dormy House accommodation and a cosy bar offering a range snacks. Full dining is available with prior booking.
Practice facilities at the club include a driving range, a practice area and putting green.
Royal Lytham and St Annes is a well-designed, challenging, links course where you can ‘walk the paths of legends’ and, hopefully, not end up in the car park!
