Overview
Connemara Golf Links, located near Ballyconneely on Ireland’s spectacular west coast, is one of the most breathtaking and authentic links experiences in the country. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, rugged mountains and vast open skies, the course delivers a raw, natural and exhilarating round that captures the wild beauty of Connemara. Designed by Eddie Hackett, with later enhancements by Tom Doak, the layout blends seamlessly into the ancient dune systems and rolling coastal terrain.
The course features 27 holes, offering three 9-hole loops that can be played in multiple combinations. Each delivers its own personality, but all share the hallmarks of true links golf: firm, rumpled fairways, deep natural bunkers, unpredictable winds and greens shaped by the land rather than heavy construction. Hackett’s minimalist philosophy is evident everywhere — the course feels as though it has always been part of the landscape.
The opening holes introduce gentle contours and sweeping views, but the drama builds as players move deeper into the dunes. Elevated tees reveal vast panoramas over Mannin Bay, while valley fairways twist between rugged mounds and natural ridges. The back nine (on the main 18) is particularly memorable, with holes played directly against the Atlantic coastline, where the wind becomes an ever-present strategic factor.
Signature holes include the par-5 14th, one of the most scenic and challenging holes in the west of Ireland, and the elevated par-3 13th, offering commanding views across the water. The greens are fast, beautifully contoured and exceptionally natural, rewarding imaginative shot-making and links-style creativity.
Connemara’s beauty is matched by its peacefulness. With no large towns nearby and vast scenery stretching in all directions, the atmosphere is tranquil and unspoiled. The Gulf Stream climate often provides surprisingly mild conditions, and the sunsets over the ocean can be spectacular.
The clubhouse is warm and inviting, offering hearty food, a relaxed bar and panoramic views across the course and the Atlantic. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and short-game areas for warm-ups before the round.
Connemara Golf Links is a wild, beautiful and unforgettable links experience — a must-play course for golfers exploring Ireland’s west coast and the Wild Atlantic Way.
