Overview
Westport Golf Club is one of the most scenic and enjoyable parkland courses in Ireland, located just outside the vibrant town of Westport in County Mayo. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Croagh Patrick and overlooking the tranquil waters of Clew Bay, the course offers a stunning blend of natural beauty, rolling terrain and strategic golf. It has been widely praised for its modern design, excellent playability and unforgettable views, making it a must-play on Ireland’s west coast.
Originally founded in 1908, Westport’s current championship layout was designed by renowned architect Fred Hawtree and reopened in 1973. The routing takes full advantage of the natural landscape, with holes that move seamlessly across gently undulating parkland, through mature woodland and out towards the rugged coastline. The result is a round that offers constant variety — wide fairways, elevated tees, water hazards, tactically placed bunkers and large, beautifully maintained greens.
The signature stretch comes late in the round, where the course meets Clew Bay. The spectacular par-5 15th hole, known for its sweeping views and dramatic approach over water, is considered one of the finest in Ireland. The closing holes play along the shoreline with Croagh Patrick rising in the distance, creating a breathtaking finish that stays with golfers long after their round ends.
Westport’s greens are consistently praised for their speed, smoothness and subtle contouring. The fairways are wide but strategic, rewarding golfers who position the ball well and think their way around the course. While the layout is enjoyable and fair for higher handicaps, it also has the length and challenge to test experienced players and has hosted major national events, including the Irish Amateur Close Championship.
The clubhouse is welcoming and modern, offering excellent dining, a stylish bar and panoramic views across the bay and mountains. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and short-game area, ensuring golfers can fully prepare for the course’s strategic demands.
Westport Golf Club blends championship-quality design with breathtaking scenery and warm west-coast hospitality. It’s a standout experience for any golfer exploring Mayo or Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.
