Most travelling golfers head east in the Algarve. Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, San Lorenzo. Lagos sits forty minutes west and offers Espiche, a more interesting town, and a coastline that’s genuinely dramatic.
Espiche is the inland course, fifteen minutes north of Lagos. It routes through pine and cork forest, plays at a fair price for the Algarve, and is well-conditioned year-round. The membership is small and tee times are easy. Most golf weeks in Lagos build around Espiche.
The course rewards a thinking round more than a long one. Driving is more strategic than heroic. Approach play matters because the greens are well-protected. Conditioning runs strong from October through April.
