From Vilamoura’s five courses to Monte Rei in the eastern Algarve, Palmares on the western coast, San Lorenzo on the Ria Formosa, the Aroeira pair near Lisbon and Troia’s dunes across the bay. Twelve courses. Two thousand hotel keys. One operator. Here is what most UK golfers haven’t quite worked out yet.
That operator is Details. The name is intentionally quiet. Details is the operating brand behind Arrow Global’s hospitality, sports and leisure platform in Portugal. They don’t put their logo on the front of the hotel. They don’t badge the scorecards. What they do is run more golf and resort inventory than anyone else in the country, and considerably more than anyone else in the Iberian peninsula.
The collection took two decades to assemble and most of it happened slowly enough that nobody outside Portugal noticed. The result is that a UK golfer planning a Portugal trip in 2027 has two options: stitch together a week from three or four different operators, or call one number and have the whole thing handled. The second option exists. It just hasn’t been marketed to the UK as cleanly as it could be. So before the rest of the country catches on, here is what is actually inside the Details collection.
Start in Vilamoura.
Vilamoura is where the collection has its centre of gravity. Five courses, four hotels, all sitting within fifteen minutes of the marina. The five courses, in the order most UK golfers will recognise them: the Old Course, designed by Frank Pennink in 1969 and the reference point for everything that came after it. Pinhal, Pennink again, restored later by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Laguna, the open and forgiving Joseph Lee design. Millennium, the Martin Hawtree course from the year 2000 and arguably the most accessible of the set. And the Els Club Vilamoura, the contemporary fifth course, signature designed by Ernie Els.
The case for Vilamoura as a week was always the same: five courses, plenty of hotel inventory, walking distance to the restaurants. What Details has done is rationalise the back end. The hotels, all of them, are inside the same operating platform: the Hyatt Regency, the Hilton Cascatas, the Vilamoura Garden, the Topázio. So a week’s package that has you on three different courses and one hotel doesn’t need to be coordinated across three accounts and four invoices. It’s one operator, one quote, one billing line.
For the UK golfer who has done Vilamoura five times across the last fifteen years, this is the change. Same courses, same hotels, same dinners along the marina. Different operating model behind the curtain.

Then go west.
Forty minutes west of Vilamoura on the A22 motorway, you get to Lagos. Lagos is where the western Algarve unfolds: the marina, the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade, the old town. The golf here belongs to Palmares Beach & Golf Resort, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr in 2010 on the site of an older Frank Pennink layout. It’s twenty-seven holes laid out across two distinct character zones. Five holes hug the Atlantic shoreline in genuine links country. The remaining twenty-two are inland on what reads more like Algarve parkland golf. The combination is unusual in Portugal and the views from the cliff sequence are some of the best in the country.
The hotel that sits with Palmares is the Palmares Beach & Golf Resort itself. Step out the door and you’re on the practice ground. The wider western Algarve hotel set in the Details portfolio includes Vale da Lapa and Vale d’Oliveiras in Carvoeiro, fifteen minutes east of Lagos, both five-star resort properties on quiet inland sites. And a handful of boutique hotels on Meia Praia and around Lagos itself: the Velamar, Portobelo, Baía. Different price points, same operator, same booking pipeline.
Stay east for the premium.
The eastern Algarve is where Portugal keeps its quietest golf. The two anchor courses in the Details portfolio sit here, and they could not be more different from each other.
Monte Rei opened in 2007 as a Jack Nicklaus signature course, set on a private estate near Vila Nova de Cacela. Within two years it had been ranked the number one course in Portugal by Golf World and pushed into the world Top 100. As of 2026 it remains the only Portugal course in the global Top 100. The conditions are perfect, the routing is sympathetic, the membership is small. It is, by some distance, the premium tee time in the country.
The other anchor is San Lorenzo, the Joseph Lee course on the edge of the Ria Formosa nature reserve at Almancil. San Lorenzo opened in 1988 and was treated as the best course in Portugal for years before Monte Rei came along. Even now, with the world’s attention on the Nicklaus design further east, San Lorenzo is regularly ranked Top 5 in country. It plays through pine forest and lakes, finishing along the Ria Formosa lagoons. Few courses in southern Europe have a back nine quite like it.
Both these courses are accessed through the Details platform. The accommodation in the eastern cluster includes The Pearl and The Anchor in the boutique band, plus cross-sell to the Vilamoura hotel base for golfers wanting one accommodation hub and multiple courses. That last point matters: a week’s trip can have you sleeping in Vilamoura but playing Monte Rei, San Lorenzo, the Old Course and Palmares. The internal routing of the Algarve makes that feasible, and Details makes it easy to book.
And there’s Lisbon.
The collection extends beyond the Algarve. Thirty minutes south of central Lisbon, in the pine forests of Aroeira, sit two more Details courses: PGA Aroeira No.1 designed by Frank Pennink in 1973, and PGA Aroeira No.2 designed by Donald Steel in 2000. Aroeira is a different golf experience to the Algarve, denser, shadier, more European parkland, and within day-trip distance of the capital city. For a UK group combining a Lisbon city break with two days of golf, the Aroeira pair are the obvious answer.
An hour and a half further south, on the Setúbal peninsula, is Troia Golf. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr in 1980, Troia is the closest thing Portugal has to a pure links experience, playing across the dunes on a narrow peninsula reaching out into the Atlantic. It’s not on the standard Algarve trip route. It is on the Details book. The Pearl Troia sits with it as the natural place to stay.
What this means for the next trip.
The practical implication for a UK or Irish golfer planning Portugal in 2027 is simple. Twelve of the courses you might want to play, and most of the hotels you might want to stay in, are inside one operating relationship. Which means a single quote can cover a more ambitious trip than was practical to assemble five years ago. Vilamoura plus Monte Rei plus Palmares used to require three operators and three sets of admin. Now it’s one.
The other implication is for the operators who don’t yet route through this platform. The market is consolidating in a direction that favours the larger groups. Details is not promoting that fact aggressively, partly because the underlying hotel brands are too varied to subsume under one mark, partly because the operating company is quite young as a single entity. But the centre of gravity has shifted, and the next few years of Portugal golf travel will be shaped by it.
